Definition
- A crater lake is a lake that forms in a volcanic crater, caldera, maar, or sometimes an impact crater or impact basin formed by a collision with a celestial object (asteroid or comet). The depression created by these geological formations fills up with precipitation, creating a lake that gradually deepens until a balance is found between the rate of precipitation and that of evaporation and soil absorption, but sometimes the overflow of one of the lake's shores limits its growth. Crater lakes formed above volcanic vents (fumaroles) are often called volcanic lakes, and their waters are typically acidic, saturated as they are with volcanic gases, and cloudy with a glaucous color. Lakes located on dormant or inactive volcanoes tend to have cool waters, and the clarity of their waters is often exceptional thanks to the absence of currents and sediment.
