functional type

A functional type is a group of organisms sharing one or more of the same responses to one or more environmental factors or affecting the ecosystem in the same way. These groupings are based on common characteristics rather than phylogenetic relationships and can be divided into two categories: functional response types and functional effect types. The classification of functional types is not categorical, and depends on the purpose of the study, its scale, the ecological processes or the environmental factor of interest. Functional response types are groups of species that respond to a biotic or abiotic environmental factor in a similar way. For example, species in an ecosystem may be grouped on the basis of their tolerance or intolerance to fire, grazing, frost, etc. Functional effect types are groups of species that affect their ecosystem in a similar way. For example, species that fix atmospheric nitrogen or increase the risk of fire can be grouped together.
