Autunian

Definición

  • The Autunian is a subdivision of the geological time scale. Its stratotype is characterized by the shales of Autun (France). This stage, from around -299 to -295 Ma, is situated at the very beginning of the Permian. The Autunian corresponds to deposits of sandstones, clays and various materials in basins in mountain massifs overlying Stephanian and pre-Saxonian deposits. The Autunian is characterized by the presence of foliage of pseudofougères with ovules (Callipteris, Taeniopteris, Autunia conferta...) related to present-day Cycas and Ginkgos, and by fossils attributable to the earliest known conifers (Walchia, Lebachia...).
