  • In geomorphology, a cave is a natural underground cavity with at least one accessible horizontal part; this can be distinguished from a sinkhole, a chasm, an abyss, etc. A cave can be formed in water-soluble mineral structures: mainly carbonate rocks (karst caves) as well as gypsum and anhydrite, even rock salt, sandstone and quartzite, gneiss and granite, basalt and some conglomerates (pseudokarst caves).
