- In geology, weathering is the chemical and physical modification of rocks, mainly due to water and variations in temperature and pressure. Chemical alteration is linked to the carbon dioxide contained in water, as well as to the nature of the rock and the climatic environment. Silicate alteration is one of the main processes involved.
