Riss-Würm Interglacial

In the Alps, the Riss-Würm interglacial corresponds to the Eemian, the penultimate interglacial period of the Quaternary. This interglacial separates the Saalian glaciation (or Riss glaciation) from the Vistulian glaciation (or Würm glaciation). It corresponds to the first part of stage 5 (5e) in isotopic chronology (around 130,000 to 115,000 years before present). Changes in orbital parameters (greater axis inclination and perigee) compared with today, known as the Milankovitch cycle, probably led to greater seasonal temperature variations in the Northern Hemisphere, although global mean annual temperatures were probably similar to those of the Holocene. The heat peak occurred around 126,000 years ago. Winters in the Northern Hemisphere were warmer and wetter than today, although some particular regions were slightly colder.
