epimerization
Definición
- Epimerization is a chemical reaction that reverses the absolute configuration of one and only one tetrahedral asymmetric center in a molecule containing several. The starting molecule and the result of the epimerization reaction are called epimers. In a broader sense, the term epimerization is used to describe the involuntary loss of optical purity of an asymmetric center, regardless of the number of asymmetric centers in the molecule. In all cases, epimerization is not necessarily complete.
