glacial-interglacial cycle

Definición

  • Astrophysicist Milutin Milanković took his theories on glaciations a step further by publishing his astronomical theory of paleoclimates, which was not accepted until 1976. This theory asserts that the great ice ages are triggered by orbital parameters, and that the amount of solar flux hitting the northern hemisphere is decisive in the development of ice sheets. The validity of his theory was proven by stratigraphy and radiometric dating, which showed that variations in eccentricity (orbital eccentricity defines, in celestial mechanics and space mechanics, the shape of the orbits of celestial objects) cyclically triggered glaciations.
