The forest is an ecosystem: a collection of highly diverse living beings living in community. It constantly recycles its organic matter (animals and plants) and its mineral matter (soils and minerals). Energy is transmitted between organisms in a balanced cycle, through the different modes of consumption. The forest produces living matter, maintains it and recycles dead matter. Trees are at the heart of this system: they transform solar energy into organic matter, provide shelter for mammals and birds, and support the growth of herbaceous plants. Their roots hold the soil in place, preventing it from crumbling and dispersing. The soil is responsible for recycling materials, thanks to its layers of litter, humus and micro-organisms.
