coral reef

Definición

  • A coral reef or barrier reef is a natural structure that results from the construction of a durable mineral substrate (formed of calcium carbonate) secreted by living beings, mainly corals. There are many different species of coral that form complex marine ecosystems, which are among the richest in biodiversity, generally at shallow depths. Coral reefs, especially in tropical regions, provide ecological niches for many animals that find food, refuge, protection and shelter. Many fish species are therefore dependent on them. Corals suffer from many diseases, the main causes of which are pollution and current global warming. (Adapted and translated from: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%C3%A9cif_corallien)
