calcification
Definición
- Calcification refers to the normal deposition of minerals in biological systems, such as the formation of stromatolites or mollusc shells. Calcifying bacteria and algae exist, which through biomineralisation can be responsible for the fouling and clogging of river bottoms or spawning grounds. However, this phenomenon has also contributed for billions of years (with stromatolites) to natural carbon sinks.
