vegetal group

Définition

  • According to classic scientific classifications, a plant is a multi-cellular, eukaryotic organism defined by its photosynthetic capacities. According to the etymology of the term, it belongs to one of the various lineages that "vegetate", i.e. that breathe, feed and grow like plants, but contrary to widespread belief, the term "plant" does not refer solely to plants. If we define plants as the set of organisms commonly recognized as "green plants", they form a monophyletic group including green algae and terrestrial plants, making up the taxon Chlorobiontes. Plants therefore include both plants and algae. However, in the sense of phylogenetics, and in modern classifications, the "plant kingdom" with its traditional content no longer exists, dispersed in several separate clades, and "plant" is now too vague a term that tends no longer to be used in botany. The plant kingdom is a polyphyletic assemblage of photosynthetic organisms whose cells have cellulose walls. This group comprises two lineages: one of algae, the other of land plants, including bryophytes (mosses and liverworts), ferns (pteridophytes), gymnosperms and angiosperms.
