Définition

  • Hematite is an Fe2O3 oxide, of the rhombohedral system, with various shapes according to the temperature of crystallization, bipyramidal (HT) to lenticular or tabular, and in one to lamellar (BT), with frequent macles, with certain finely striated faces. It is black to steel-grey (red dust when scratched with a knife), with scaly varieties with purplish highlights, and other compact grey or red ones. It forms under oxidising conditions in impregnations, masses and veins in alkaline magmatic rocks (granites, rhyolites, trachytes, syenites) and in metamorphic rocks. It is the main ore of iron.
