Lotharingian

Définition

  • The Lotharingian is the upper sub-stage of the Sinemurian, which is itself a stage of the Lower Jurassic (Lias), succeeding the Hettangian and preceding the Pliensbachian. Its age ranges from around -195 million years (indicative) to -190.8 million years. Its duration, significant for a Jurassic sub-stage, is of the order of 4 million years. The name Lotharingian was given in reference to the Upper Sinemurian outcrops in Lorraine. The term Lotharingian understory is mainly used in continental Europe. The lower part of the Sinemurian, which is in fact the lower sub-stage of the Sinemurian, is not named by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS).
