Définition

  • Cold stage of the Weichselian glaciation (Upper Pleistocene). For most of the Weichselian, northern Germany remained ice-free. The maximum advance occurred late, around 24,000 - 22,000 BC, and was much weaker than the Elster and Saale advances. Relatively short-lived, the traces it left behind are not very marked, but show that the ice sheet advanced as far as a line passing through Flensburg, Hamburg and Brandenburg-on-the-Havel. Just south of this line, a mighty river flowed. It was fed by meltwater, but also by Central European rivers blocked by the ice cap. It gave way to a succession of proglacial valleys formed as the ice sheet retreated: the Baruth, Berlin and Eberswalde proglacial valleys.
