Concept information
Preferred term
osmotic pressure
Subject
- Food sciences and technology
Example
- The osmotic phenomenon occurs when two solutions of different concentrations are separated by a membrane which is permeable to the solvent but impermeable to the solute (...). If the concentration in solution 1 is larger than in solution 2, the osmotic pressure in solution 1 will be higher than in solution 2 and, assuming identical hydrostatic pressure in both solutions, there will be a flow of solvent from solution 2 into solution 1.
