Definition

  • A nominated specimen representing the taxonomic unit mentioned in a work, which may or may not be any category of type, for example, a specimen used in a physiological study or retained as evidence that it was found in a particular location. Traditional: A reference specimen which, after having been used as material in a scientific work, was preserved and kept in a permanent curated collection, such as that of a museum. (Hawksworth 2010)
