Definition
- In the nomenclatural hierarchy, the highest-ranking nominal-series fully regulated by the Code. It includes nomina of taxa at the ranks of family, subfamily, tribe, subtribe, superfamily, and any additional ranks that may be required. (Dubois 2000)

- Code: Family-series: In the hierarchy of classification, the highest-ranking group of taxa whose names are fully regulated by the Code. The family group includes taxa at the ranks of superfamily, family, subfamily, tribe, and any other rank below superfamily and above the genus group that may be required, such as subtribe.
