Definition
- Qualification of a nomenclatural system in which ranks of nomina are mentioned but used in an inconsistent manner, for example assigning different ranks to parordinate taxa, or having different hierarchies between the same ranks in different parts of the classification, or using ranks for some taxa but no rank for others, simply referred to as ‘taxa’ or ‘new taxa’. Ranks used in such a system provide no information on the hierarchical relationships between nomina, and by way of consequence on the structure of the tree adopted as a basis for the taxonomy. (Dubois 2007)
Note
- Etymology: G: ψευδς (pseudes) lying, false - Frankish: hring, circle, ring , from Proto-Germanic hringaz, circle, ring, something curved.
