Preferred term

quasirhizonyme

Definition

  • Suprageneric nomen HN based on the stem of either a nomen of the SS, FS or CS or of a non-scientific name of animal, this stem being combined with an ending derived from another or several other terms (e.g., -formes, -morpha, -phora, etc.). If proposed as a family-series nomen, it is incorrectly formed according to Article 13.2 of the Code, and is therefore a family-series anoplonym (nomenclaturally unavailable). If proposed as a class-series nomen and available, common particular cases are those of such nomina the original endings of which were derived from the roots forma (Latin) or μορφή, morphe (Greek) meaning ‘form, shape’: under DONS as emended by Dubois & Frétey (2020a), it should be used under the respective standard endings -iformae or -omorphae, which are not in a relation of hierarchy but may be both used at whatever rank (Dubois & Frétey 2020)

Note

  • Etymology: L: quasi, as if, just as - G: ρίζα (rhiza), root, stem - ὄνομα (onoma), name.
